What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgery to reshape the nose. Popularly known as the ‘NOSE JOB”. The ideal nose is a gracefully “blended” collection of gentle CURVES & ROLLS. Rhinoplasty aims at achieving a natural and aesthetic harmony between the nose and the other facial features like eyes, cheeks, lips and chin.
What gives the nose its shape?
The shape of the nose on the outside is due to the shape of bone and cartilage and the overlying skin.
The top of the nose is made of bone shaped like a roof, which is hard. The middle and tip of the nose are made of cartilage which is softer.
The skin varies in thickness from person to person, and also affects the shape.

What are the reasons for getting a Rhinoplasty?
Contrary to popular belief, rhinoplasty is not done for cosmetic reasons alone, but for functional problems as well.
Cosmetic Reasons
People who are dissatisfied with the natural shape of their nose.
They may have concerns about the:
- Nasal bridge or dorsum: hump, depression
- Nasal tip: too wide, round, bulbous, beaked or lacking definition
- Nasal length: too long, too short
Functional Reasons
Rhinoplasty has a functional aspect, where it is done to eliminate breathing difficulties.
It is commonly performed in conjunction with surgeries to correct:
- Sinusitis
- Deviated nasal septum
- Congenital defects (eg. cleft lip, cleft palate)
- Post-injury Nasal defect
The aim of rhinoplasty therefore, is to give the patient a functional as well as an aesthetic nose, along with a well-balanced face.
A more appropriate answer to this question depends on an individual’s thorough Facial Aesthetic Analysis, functional nasal analysis and consultation.
